Avatar events raise $14,192 for breast cancer research
November 28, 2006
Avatar Properties Inc. raised $14,192 for breast cancer education and research at its second annual charity golf tournament and walk-a-thon which were held in its active adult community of Solivita in Poinciana.
The funds raised went to Florida’s Sun Coast Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Avatar’s golf tournament and walk-a-thon have raised a two-year total of nearly $29,000 for the same organization, according to Bari Stone, event coordinator.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35-54, and the disease also accounts for more than 75 percent of all cancer deaths in women 55 years of age and older. Although most people tend to think of breast cancer as a women’s disease, men get breast cancer, too. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,200 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in American men each year.
